I went out with friends on a weekend of work and play in Dec 2013 — surfing and to get some still photos for work that I’ll start for a gallery show in LA in November. Or as my Japanese friends say: sarfing. I’ve been fascinated with the ocean — ‘The Perfect Storm’ was a huge influence on getting out on the ocean again. Will try making a few small paintings and see how she goes.
Tried a couple Channel Island boards that rocked. Decided to para-sail and take a camera up with me. I hit the water once, idiotas — needed a MOVI. Caught lift to the point where I didn’t really want to look down much anymore. Very long way down. Not sure the camera conveys that fully. Generally, I like the Hero3 footage. The horizon line needed correction from distortion — and tried Crumple Pop’s Fisheye Fixer and it was a nice software solution for the issue. I tried HDR, after much discussion in Cabo, but didn’t like the effect. It looked too heavy handed for my taste.
When I was in Customs, for some odd reason, the Clooney bit (above) kept playing in my head. I like the way he steps into the microphone… Hillybilly music. It reminds me of the Ronny Wood and Ronny Lane LP entitled ‘Mahoney’s Last Stand’. No one does Hillbilly music better than the British… Wasn’t O, Brother Where Art Thou? sort of a tip of the hat to either The Illiad or The Odyssey? I’m thinking, yes, because the position of the protagonist was ultimately unresolvable. Like a case of Game Theory gone awry. No optionality.
