Charlie Watts always referred to himself as a taskman, yet he’s one of the best drummers around. Maybe there’s something to be learned here? In a band — you’d always think that the drummer keeps time. In the Stones; not so, methinks. It seems like Keith keeps time with Charlie and (then) Bill Wyman following him. Definitely, not traditional and dangerous to prioritise it in that manner — because it seems, at any minute, it could all fall off of a cliff and massively fail. Yet it doesn’t. Maybe that’s what makes the backline/rhythm section so interesting and seductive.
Charlie is aces.
