This C&W video is interesting on a number of levels. They’re pretty powerful and authentic emotionally. (The pedal steel guitar ain’t bad, either.) This is a Buck Owens cover by Dwight Yoakam. When you listen to them, initially, you think that they’re sort of cartoonish characterizations. But then you think it was probably written in the fifties or sixties — more honky tonks and the story probably represents some actual story, somewhere. I was talking about it with a friend of mine that’s a screenwriter in NYC — and she said in a screenplay, as well as life, we’re defined by the choices that we make. You can lose sight of that but it’s a really poignant point.
